Primal Shots: A Neuroscience Podcast Show With a Twist

Introducing Primal Shots, a podcast show hosted by Kavin Mistry M.D.

By Dr. Kavin Mistry, MD

What does it take to live with greater focus, resilience, and purpose? As a neuroradiologist, I’ve spent much of my career studying the human brain. But understanding the brain is only part of understanding the human experience.

That belief inspired Primal Shots, my neuroscience podcast show exploring the connections between brain health, longevity, human performance, relationships, and purposeful living.

Formerly known as the Mind of Mistry podcast, Primal Shots now has its own official identity and a distinctive format built around five functional wellness shots and five increasingly meaningful questions.

"From the ground to the cosmos. As the shots get healthier, the questions get deeper."

Why I Created Primal Shots

My work in neuroscience has taught me to examine how the brain functions. My experiences beyond medicine have encouraged me to ask how people use their attention, navigate uncertainty, build relationships, and find meaning.

Health is not simply about what happens inside the body. Our daily habits, environment, relationships, and decisions all contribute to how we experience life.

In my work exploring cognitive health, I’ve become increasingly interested in the relationship between how the brain functions and how we navigate everyday experiences.

I created Primal Shots, the neuroscience podcast show, to explore those connections with people who bring different experiences and perspectives to the table.

Some guests are entrepreneurs. Others are authors, wellness leaders, or people making a difference in their communities. Each conversation brings us closer to understanding not only how people succeed, but also what makes their lives meaningful.

Five Shots. Five Dimensions of Being Human.

Every Primal Shots podcast episode follows a journey through five signature beverages. Each shot represents a human quality and introduces a question that guides the next stage of the conversation.

Grounding: Presence

“How do you start your day with presence?”

The Grounding Shot opens the conversation by exploring morning routines, awareness, and the choices that help us begin the day intentionally.

Before the demands of work, technology, and everyday responsibilities take over, how do we reconnect with ourselves?

Being present is a skill worth cultivating. I’ve explored this further in my article on science-backed ways to stay in the present.

Focus: Clarity

“What are you focused on currently?”

The Focus Shot examines attention and priorities.

In a world filled with distractions, clarity often begins with deciding what deserves our energy and what we need to let go.

For anyone who has wondered why it’s so difficult to focus, this conversation offers an opportunity to reflect on how we direct our attention and what competes for it.

Endurance: Drive

“What drive keeps you going?”

The Endurance Shot explores motivation, discipline, and resilience.

It moves the conversation beyond achievement to examine what sustains people through uncertainty, setbacks, and difficult decisions.

Our sense of drive can change over time. Understanding why we sometimes feel demotivated can be part of recognizing what helps us continue pursuing meaningful goals.

Tribal: Connection

“What connections do you treasure the most?”

The Tribal Shot shifts the conversation from individual performance to relationships and community.

My experiences with the Hadza community in Tanzania helped shape my appreciation for human connection and the importance of belonging. Those experiences continue to influence my perspective on the importance of community and the role relationships play in a meaningful life.

This question invites guests to reflect on the people who have influenced their lives and the relationships that continue to give them strength.

Cosmic: Legacy

“What do you want to be remembered for?”

The Cosmic Shot closes the conversation with a question about meaning and legacy.

After exploring presence, focus, drive, and connection, we arrive at the larger question of what our choices are ultimately building toward. Legacy may be found in professional accomplishments, but it can also live in the people we help, the relationships we nurture, and the values we pass on.

The question of how to find your purpose becomes especially relevant when we begin thinking about what we want our lives to represent.

Conversations That Connect Neuroscience and Everyday Life

A neuroscience podcast becomes more interesting when scientific questions meet real human experiences.

On Primal Shots, I speak with guests whose perspectives span learning, entrepreneurship, wellness, leadership, and community service.

Nick Hutchison, founder of BookThinkers, explores the role of reading, learning, and intentional personal growth. You can watch my conversation with Nick Hutchison to hear how books and ideas can influence the way we approach life.

Cliona O’Hara, CEO of the Napoleon Hill Institute, discusses mindset, self-discipline, and purpose.

Marcus Antebi, founder of Juice Press and Good Sugar, shares perspectives on meditation, nervous system awareness, and human behavior.

Edwin Densmore of Lighthouse 1893, one of Philadelphia’s oldest and largest nonprofit organizations, brings a perspective on resilience, mentorship, and community impact.

These conversations remind me that understanding human performance requires more than studying productivity or physical health. It also means examining the relationships, beliefs, and experiences that influence how we live.

What Makes Primal Shots Different?

The five-wellness shot format creates a natural progression from practical questions to deeper reflections. The conversation begins with how a guest approaches the day. It moves through attention, motivation, and relationships before ending with a question about legacy.

The drinks create a ritual, but the real value comes from the stories and insights that emerge. As a physician, I bring a scientific perspective to these discussions while recognizing the difference between established evidence and personal experience.

My goal is not to offer quick fixes or universal answers. It is to encourage curiosity and help listeners think more intentionally about their health, habits, and purpose.
